Back on the bike...

At least sort of. After 3 days of tonsillitis and two days of antibiotics I feel well enough to go out for a short training ride on the bike. It helps that it's 25 degrees and sunny out there. Let's roll... Read more

Race report: Jersey Kick Off

Day 1 after my race and I got the flu... The only thing about having the flu is that laying on the couch give me a bit of time to do a write up of yesterdays New Jersey Kick Off Triathlon. It's not the 65 degree water that is too blame for my condition. All Read more

Jersey Shore - Here I come...

Finally a chance to use my new wetsuit and a chance to disprove the therory of not trying out new gear in competition. I am doing the Jersey Shore Kick Off Tri this Saturday: 0.4 mile swim, 10 mile bike and 3.5 mile run. It will be first open water swim in 2012 (and Read more

More structure

In order to get a bit more structure to my training and set up a real training schedule towards my goal, The US Nationals in August, I started to look into online training plans and books that could help me out. After spending most part of a day searching online and coming up empty handed Read more

The season is coming to an end

Posted on by Laurits Fischer-Hansen Posted in Bikes | Leave a comment

There is no denying it: Fall is coming, even here in New Jersey. The leaves are turning yellow, some of them are already on the ground. Temperatures are rapidly falling into the low 70′s (or even 60′s!!!) and more and more thunderstorms are rolling in everyday.

So the long days of riding in short sleeves and short bibs are also coming to an end. The obsession with getting the sharpest tan-line has changed into a desperate quest for maintaining just a slight color difference between the upper and lower part of the arm/leg.

The road bike get fewer and fewer looks and might event start to collect a bit of dust during the dark months coming ahead. But is it the end of cycling? Of course not! There is doubt that the roadbike will stay inside for the winter.

However, it is time to locate the old mountainbike that has lived at miserable life in the basement for the last years. The mountainbike that has so long lived a sorrowful life without gears, without suspension fork and with skinny one inch tires. It is time to convert the old commuter back into a full fledged montainbike once again. In short it is time to give the old Kona Kula a spin around the circus once more.

This is how it looked a few years ago. I hope I can restore it to its glory!

Pace line etiquette

How long to stay in the front?

I found this article about riding in a bunch the other day:

I have done a fair share of group rides but I must admit that I am don’t have 20 years of experience riding in large groups, doing pacelines and rotating. Most of my group riding has just been easy rides with 1-3 others (or alone – Maybe I should get more cycling friends?).

I do however recognize the pattern being described with most riders riding their asses off when its their turn to pull. Last time I was out on a group ride I spend most of my time chasing the various people that were splitting up the group every time they did a pull, telling them to stay off the gas because half the group was 100 feet behind us.

I tried to don’t overdo the pace while pulling and keeping the group together, mostly because i remember what it is like be the guy in the group being last and always playing catchup at the next stop sign.

But one of the questions that I haven’t been able to find an answer to is how long should a pull be?

Is a pull counted in seconds/min, in meters/yards or just in how long it takes you to reach your max heartrate? Does it depend on your place in the hierarchy in the group and is that hierarchy based on how strong you are, your seniority or just how expensive your bike is :) ?

Feedback appreciated!

What to choose: New camera?

Posted on by Laurits Fischer-Hansen Posted in Bikes | Leave a comment

As an avid bike rider and an avid photographer I often want to take photos on my training rides, but my only camera is a Nikon D300 with a rather large 17-55mm lens that doesn’t really fit well into my jersey back pocket.

So I need to get me a new, smaller package that I can take along on my rides.

A few criteria are:
1: Cheap ($100-200)
2: Small (Should be able to fit into a back pocket)
3: Sort of rugged (not necessarily waterproof, but should be able to take some sweat)
4: Rechargeable batteries (No cameras with AA or equivalent)

If you have any good ideas let me know.

Rapha-mania on Ebay

Posted on by Laurits Fischer-Hansen Posted in Bikes | Leave a comment

The last couple of weeks, I have been trying to get a hold of a new jersey and bib-shorts as the only cycling clothes I have in the closet right now are from the 2010/2011 Saxo Bank line-up. Admittedly I have quite a bit of it, but it would be nice to mix things up at bit once in a while so I don’t look too much like a taller, fat version of Andy Schleck all the time.

Please note the similarities in style between Andy and I. Can YOU tell the difference?

So I have been trawling the web in search of something a little more subtle and have of course also looked at the high-end clothes from Rapha. But the cheapskate in me has rejected the really high pricetag (especially since much of my current cycling clothes has been free) so I have taken to Ebay – the mothership of all things cheap and second hand..

Or should I say supposedly cheap since most of the Rapha items on Ebay are being sold at up to 80% of the current retail price. 80%! for something used, sometimes not even in good shape anymore. It doesn’t matter if the lining has gone up, the lettering has started to crack or the size is a XXXXL – everything is flying off the shelves quicker that Alex Rasmussen can say: Whereabouts.

So I keep looking, hoping that one day I get lucky – getting myself that brand new Rapha Tourmalet jersey for $50. If not, I will just have to get myself on the Rapha Condor Sharp Team. Shouldn’t be too hard…

Alternative 2 could be to harden the f*** up and pay the retail price!

Watching the World Championships?

Posted on by Laurits Fischer-Hansen Posted in Bikes | 2 Comments

So, the cycling world championships starts in few days. For most of my life I have lived in Denmark, and for the last 4 I lived literally 2km from the course finish line.

I have ridden the course and the final especially the final climb numerous times. In my younger days that last hill meant that I was at the start of my favorite mtb track at Geels Forrest and in the last couple of years it was the start of whatever training ride I found myself on. So I was kind of looking forward to being at the finish line cheering for the Danish Squad.

But as I relocated to the beautiful New Jersey as of last November, I am no longer so lucky as to be at the finish line, so instead I am confined to watching whatever obscure webchannel I can find and read boring extracts online and in the newspapers.

Does anyone have a good solid webcast stream that is worth following?

The smaller things in life

Got new stuff for my bike today. Nothing major, but still something nice!

1: New headset cap and spacers:

I was tired of looking at my very boring FSA topcap , so I decided to get myself one of the topcaps from a Swiss company called Parts of Passion. They do high-end parts and can stamp that famous “Made in Switzerland” label on their parts. While I was at it I also got myself a new set of spacers to set myself free of the last old FSA parts on my bike.

And I saved 15 grams all in all in the process…

2: New bottle cage bolts:

For some reason the stock bolts on my frame kept loosening, so it was time for some new ones. I tried getting the Parts of Passion bolts, but since Fairwheelbikes didn’t have the Parts of Passion bolts at their website I went for the KCNC bolts instead.

My next bike???

I found this Speedvagen bike while reading the newest issue of Paved Magazine.

It is from the company called Vanilla Bicycles and must be the cleanest looking bike I have seen for a while.

I definitely need to have a closer look at their road bike. Let the buying process begin (I wish)

Rediscovering what I always knew.

Posted on by Laurits Fischer-Hansen Posted in Bikes | Leave a comment

The last week have seen increase in the use of my road bike. When I started my training for the Philly marathon 7 weeks back, I more or less put my bike to rest as the running was taking up most of my time.

However with my increasing hip problem I have rediscovered my bike and I must admit that even though running is quite fun, there is nothing like riding your bike.

Being out on the road either alone or with a group just gives you a sense of freedom that can not be underestimated. I did a group ride last Saturday for the first times in 8 months and that was a great experience.

Top 3 things were:

  • Doing 40 km/h drafting 20cm from the rider in front of you
  • Acceleration uphill to your eyes almost pop out of your head
  • Drinking double espressos at the local coffee house at 8 am

What are your favorite things about riding your bike?

Albert på Field Day

I dag havde Albert Field Day på skolen. En hel dag hvor børnene mod meget sædvane rent faktisk fik løbet rundt og leget udenfor. Normalt er de ret bænket inde i klasselokalet så det var en rar forandring for en 5 årig med krudt i røven.
